Honey Berry Smoothie

No heartfelt anecdote, life update or opinionated rant today. Just a yummy smoothie recipe to brighten even the darkest morning.


I realize people don’t go searching online for groundbreaking smoothies, rather, the majority of us completely wing it in the mornings. And who wants to clean a blender before going to work anyways? I guarantee this is worth it, and that you haven’t tried it before.

First of all, Trader Joe’s Greek yogurts are my favorite, not to sweet, and satisfyingly filling. I use half an individual sized container of their Honey yogurt in this, which replaces my usual addition of honey as a natural sweetener into smoothies.

Second, the fruit on top; essential to the success of any smoothie. When I’ve reached the last few sips through the straw at the bottom of my mason jay, I’m excited to spoon the treasure that has fell to the bottom, chunks of nectarine coated in hemp hearts and leftover smoothie sweetness.

Third, hemp hearts. What the eff are those, you ask (and I also asked when Leanne brought a bunch of packets of the seedlings home and offered me one)? Hemp hearts are raw, shelled hemp seeds. They are slightly nutty in flavor, similar to a pine nut (and also, just as smooth). They are not only super fun to break open between your teeth and sprinkle all over the top of your smoothie, cereal, yogurt, or salad, but they are also packed with protein, potassium, 13 percent of our daily iron, and 8 percent of our daily Vitamin 8 (1 tbsp, 40 calories).

The trick to a good smoothie is to pour the liquid (in this case, the almond milk) only halfway to the amount of fruit and such in your blender to start off. This created a nice foundation for the balance of thickness. You don’t want it to be too soupy; but to pour out into your cup with ease.

I’ve also read that the thicker, the healthier, because it will keep you fuller longer. This recipe makes 1.5 cups (12 oz) of smoothie. Feel free to add peanut butter, chia seeds, or other additives to keep you going longer!

You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
  • Half a banana
  • 1/2 a single serving of Trader Joes honey  yogurt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tsp Maritoba hemp hearts
  • 1 nectarine, cubed
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (if you want it to be a bit sweeter)

Blend together till desired consistency is achieved. Pour into a cute lil mason jar, stick in a straw, and slurp it up till it’s gone.
